Starstruck

By Natalie Sherman

Today was the day of meeting our representatives!

We began the morning at TWC, first hearing from John Hudak (deputy director of the Center for Effective Public Management and senior fellow, governance studies, The Brookings Institute), who spoke about marijuana policy and the pros and cons of its legalization in some states. Next, we heard from Brendan Doherty (Professor, United States Naval Academy), who spoke about presidential and congressional fundraising, and the necessity of fundraising for candidates. Both of these were very interesting, but it was nothing compared to the afternoon!

We headed to the office of Abby Finkenauer – a Drake alum! It was so amazing to meet her and I certainly felt starstruck! It is crazy how impactful meeting our elected representatives can be. Although I do not live in Finkenauer’s district, the high school I attended was in her district. She is an amazing representative and woman, and I feel proud to be attending the same university she once did!

Next, we met Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey! Wow! What a charismatic guy. He certainly had energy and took the time to connect with each of us. I am sure we will be seeing more of him in Iowa, if you know what I mean.

We finished the afternoon by meeting with Cindy Axne! Another power woman of Iowa. She gave us some great insight into her start in office and how the government shutdown has impacted our elected representatives. I voted in District 3, so it was great to meet the person I voted for!

We ended the day with a reception with other Washington Center students, where we heard from Jonathan Karl, an ABC News White House correspondent.

All in all – another exciting day!
