Godwin’s Law

By Harrison Yu

Godwin’s law, according to Wikipedia, states that, “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Hitler approaches 1.”  So, the more popular a political figure becomes, the more likely that someone will compare said person to Hitler. Both the current president and president-elect have been compared to the fascist leader on a variety of subjects.

Of course, the person that invokes Hitler’s name is said to have lost the argument because the comparison is usually so ridiculous that no person, unless they carry out a mass genocide, will come close to being the next Hitler.  No, the mandate under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) that all persons have health insurance was not one of Hitler’s strategies.  No, despite criticizing certain members of the media, Trump has not censored them on the scale of Hitler.

What Hitler did was indoctrinate the youth into his own way of thinking, had a state-run media that promoted his propaganda, and sent millions of Jews, political opponents, homosexuals, gypsies, and others into work camps and death camps.  I encourage any non-believers or those who don’t fully feel the gravity of the situation to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, as our group did today.

Of course, Godwin’s law doesn’t dictate what we should do when we truly feel as though someone is following in Hitler’s footsteps.  One of the more fascinating exhibits at the museum did just that.  Through personal accounts, the story was told repeatedly to stand up for what you believe is right.  Protect your neighbors and friends from harm, even if it means giving up your own life.  Not every person will adhere to this noblest of sacrifices, but doing so would be of immense importance.  Most European Jews lacked the support system to escape.  Many even came as close as Cuba and Panama before being turned back to Europe.  So, support those whom you believe in and those whom you believe to be in danger.

There have already been so many criticisms of the president-elect, and Godwin’s law has taken a strong hold.  However, I encourage people to wait and see.  Wait and see what policies Trump implements.  He has not taken control yet, so don’t be critical of an agenda that he has yet to follow.  Be on the lookout for government propaganda.  Be mindful of the fears of your fellow countrymen.  I highly doubt that Trump will enforce anything along the lines of mass genocide in this country, but be vigilant.
