My main goal for the time I spend in Washington D.C. is to get a clear understanding of what living and working in D.C. is like. I am also looking forward to the speaker series we will listen to at The Washington Center. I am excited to have the opportunity to experience the inauguration and the build-up to it in person and I want to enjoy the experience to the fullest.
Ever since my junior year of high school when I decided I want to be a political journalist, I have had my eye on the possibility of living and working in D.C. I am hoping this trip will help me decide whether that is something that I want to pursue. Either way, I am looking forward to meeting a number of different professionals who call D.C. their home. I am excited to feel the vibe the community of D.C. has, which means going beyond the typical tourist attractions. I hope to meet people who are working in many different professions during the Drake Alumni Reception and at other events we attend.
I am also hoping to learn a lot from the seminar itself. I like the thought of discussing policy proposals with other students in an “elevated” manner. I would really like to take advantage of the morning sessions that bring all of TWC students together in order to engage with those outside of the Drake community. I would also like to pick up some ideas on how to discuss politics with people who may not be as interested in politics as the students who attend events like this seminar. Ideally, the ideas would work outside of a classroom setting as well.
Lastly, I want to take in the whole inauguration experience. I enjoy history and I am looking forward to learning more about the history and importance of the inauguration. It will also be fun to see the build-up to the inauguration from two separate perspectives at the same time, on the media and in person. I hope to get the chance to make a comparison between the two and I am looking forward to having class discussions about the media coverage of the inauguration.
I am excited to see what I will all learn and do during this class. I am hoping to come out of this trip with more friends and connections, as well as a well-rounded understanding of the inauguration and Washington D.C.
